Our dearly departed Roger Nichols worked his Mastering Magic and this was probably his last work of audio art. RIP Roger!

Cover art choices: Don and Bill on the Thames in front of the Tate Gallery with St Pauls in the distance

(Photo taken by a Chinese student, he spoke no English, (and we with no Chinese in our lexicon) and he was totally helpful and gracious.

Maybe one day he will see his photo and I hope he contacts us…a great picture!)

Or maybe we could use this one designed by Maria Uspenski?

Universal Music of Japan created their own art and album design, here’s their version

http://bit.ly/JSK2mi

Now you can read about each track one by one by clicking on MUSIC at the top of Home Page

and then find the Trans Atlántica track you want to know about and click on ‘info‘.

There you will find a story about each track and pictures to accompany.

Global iTunes purchase information will be available soon.

This is a benefit for the amazing work that the local non-profit El Sindicato does for the community. They provide classes in dance, music and theater arts for up to 120 students per day. And the community is such lovely gemstone in the mero mero center of Mexico.

So I’m feeling very lucky to be invited and looking forward to hanging with my old friend and los amigos que ahora conozco hacia 2008, cuando Oscar Castro-Neves y yo tocaron alla.

My brother Dave and I recorded a two piano concert at the Rundfunks FM Radio Hall, Studio 2 in Munich, November of 2009.

CareMusicGroup.de released it in German territories in September and this is the only US-based release, starting today. You can stream it, share it, or buy it.

Here are a couple of our thoughts about doing this project, midstream in our Hang tour through Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg.

“Thinking about coming back to Germany to play music with my brother Dave brought up great memories going all the way back to the ‘60’s when I hitchhiked all through Germany, played in ratskellers, went to East Berlin through Checkpoint Charlie…Then, as now, the musical knowledge and sophistication of German audiences ranked extremely high. And we are happy to continue our long musical relationship with old friend Tom Glagow who we know back in the MCA 80′s.”

Special Thanks to Tom, to Maria Uspenski, Lee Ritenour, Will Kennedy, Wolfgang Schmid, Nils Wülker, Till Brönner, Karsten Jahnke, Björn Gissa, Rebekka Zander, Don Murray, Beate Sampson, Ulrike Schwarz, Elisabeth Panzer, and our new friend Sedal Sardan @ A-Trane in Berlin. Enjoy, Don Grusin

And from Dave…”Just adding my thanks to Tom Glagow & the rest of the gang… and of course to my little brother, Don, for allowing me to play along.“ Mit allen besten Wünschen, Dave Grusin

Don Grusin truly epitomizes the term visionary. Artist, innovator, educator, performer and advocate for social change, Don Grusin Music and Bad Dog Music are the production houses and publishing entities for this esteemed American composer, producer, arranger and pianist with 3 Grammy’s, 20 CD’s and an unstoppable global vision that infuses everything he does from recording to teaching.

The Musician

Born in Colorado and influenced mightily by his immigrant father from Latvia, Don grew up in Colorado as a wannabe cowboy, played sports in school, and always had music as something to fall back on – if you grew up in the Grusin household, you had to practice piano. Don started when he was 6, and his musical influences came from square-dancing to country-western bands at the grange; from pianists Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans and Vladimir Horowitz; to his dad’s strolling through the house playing 2nd violin parts of Bartok string quartets.

Also of influence was their small town R&B radio station where Don digested the music of the great soul and funk bands and singers. This is how Don’s interest in African and Latin American music was born. Adding to this was his older brother Dave, who pointed him, unwittingly really, to the great jazz players of the day (1950’s-60’s).

To complement his interest in world music, Don obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a Masters Degree in Economics from the University of Colorado. He taught as a Fulbright Professor of Economics at the Autonomous University in Guadalajara, Mexico, before returning to the U.S. to enter the music business full-time after joining Quincy Jones’ band for a Japan-U.S. tour in the mid 1970s.

Don was the creative sparkplug for the acclaimed Atlantic Records fusion ensemble Friendship, and from there proceeded to record and produce scores of albums over the course of the next 35 years – including 20 of his own – as well as composing for and producing Ernie Watts’ Grammy-winning Quest CD, Musican. He has had four recording homes over the years – GRP out of NYC, VideoArtsMusic in Tokyo, JVC for Japan and Asia and CareMusicGroup in Germany.

(For a complete list of recordings/projects, please see http://music.dongrusin.com/.)

Don has recorded and played with many esteemed players over the years including Sergio Mendes, Patti Austin, Oscar Castro-Neves, Quincy Jones, Zoot Sims, Joe Pass, Dori Caymmi, Sadao Watanabe, Frank Quintero, Brenda Russell, Ernie Watts, Gerald Albright, Nelson Rangell, Paul Warburton, Jim Hall, Simone, Luizao and Artur Maia, Gilberto Gil, Flora Purim, Airto, Larry Carlton, Harvey Mason, Nathan East, Lee Ritenour, Armand Sabal-Lecco, Abe Laboriel, Alex Acuña, Marcio Montarroyos, Ivan Lins, Milton Nascimento, Paulinho Braga, Leon Ware – musical geniuses from all over the global map – who continue to accompany and inspire him on an ongoing basis.

Since 1975 Don has been intrinsically involved with the music of Brazil and Latin America, one of his great passions. He travelled to Bogota, Colombia, with Pete Escovedo’s Latin Jazz band, Azteca (including Pete’s daughter, the percussion virtuoso Shiela E.), while he was teaching Economics at Foothill College near San Francisco. That trip enabled him to listen to an amazing array of new artists, and set him on a path to play and record with many players and singers from all over Latin America.

Tocando Tierra – A Tribute to Latin American Music, was the brainchild of Don and Frank Quintero in 2000. They commissioned 36 artists from all over Latin America to record with Master Engineer Roger Nichols for this all-star grand 3-CD production that featured artists Pedro Luis e A Parede and Joyce – Brazil; Armando Manzanero – Mexico; Compay Segundo, Gema y Pavel, Lucrecia , Aramis Galindo, Mayito Rivera – Cuba; Soledad Bravo, Ilan Chester, Guaco, Aldemaro Romero, Gurrufio – Venezuela; Eva Allyon, Rony Campos – Peru; Edwin Colon Zayas – Puerto Rico; Luis Enrique – Nicaraugua; Maridalia Hernandez – Dominican Republic; Béla Fleck, Shiela E., Paquito D’Rivera and the roaring rhythm section of Don and Frank Quintero leading La Bola (the gang), which included Brazilian guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves, Mexican bassist Abraham Laboriel, Peruvian drummer Alex Acuna and Peruvian guitarist Ramon Stagnaro. Unicef was a partial sponsor, and the album received a Venezuelan Grammy.

As Brazilian music resonates so much with Don, he has recorded many projects there – producing the album Vicios with Simone in 1985. His long association with Dori Caymmi on many of his albums planted seeds that are creating projects with new-on-the-scene singer-guitarists Totonho Villeroy, Luis Brasil and Renato Braz, and they are currently completing music for a CD in Rio which will include guest singers Milton Nascimento, Ivan Lins, Leila Pinheiro and Ana Carolina.

In 2006 Don received a Grammy nomination for his live contemporary jazz DVD and CD,
The Hang, and received another Grammy in 2008 for his contribution to Paul
Winter’s CD, Crestone. He also released a solo CD, Piano in Venice, in 2008—
a collection of tunes inspired by the moods and grooves of the Venice, California
beach community. In 2011, another Grammy came his way for his composition and production collaboration on another Paul Winter album, Miho – Journey to the Mountain, a work based on the primordial music and instruments of the world, captured in recording at I.M Pei’s latest architectural contribution, the Miho museum, in the mountains above Kyoto, Japan.

Don created a band for The Hang tour in Germany this past fall and had as its pre-eminent musicians guitarist Lee Ritenour, drummer Will Kennedy, and his brother, Dave Grusin. While in Munich, Don and his brother recorded their dueling Steinway pianos project at a live radio broadcast for the Bayerischer Rundfunk entitled One Night Only, scheduled for release later this year.
Having taken his Hang band to New Orleans in 2005, he was invited in 2010 by the
Jazz and Heritage Foundation organizers to bring his long-time associates Abraham Laboriel, Oscar Castro-Neves, Alex Acuña, and Justo Almario back for a benefit honoring local New Orleans mentors of a children’s landscape and redevelopment organization, The Longue Vue Mission.

Most recently, Don completed a musical collaboration with Bill Sharpe of the great Shakatak band in the UK. Entitled Trans Atlántica, the CD is a musical travelogue – a collection of tracks produced and energized by two years of visiting one another’s studios from LA to the UK to Boulder, and sending ideas and files back and forth over the Internet. It features players and singers including Charlie Bisharat, Elvis du Chez, Ashley Maher, and Derek Nash. The CD was mastered by multiple Grammy-winner Roger Nichols (Steely Dan) and is also set for release late in 20ll.

The Educator

Don received an honorary Doctorate of Music from Five Towns College in Huntington, NY, and is working with colleagues both there and at the University of Colorado where, as a frequent participant since 1990, he speaks and performs at the University of Colorado’s annual Conference on World Affairs.

As a result of his 35 years of travels playing and recording around the globe, Don was struck by finding many fellow musicians doing positive social change work in their communities and countries and has parlayed his thoughts and experiences into a multidisciplinary course at the ATLAS Institute, also at the University of Colorado, called World Music Video Projects as Catalyst for Social Change. Don created the class to bring together such diverse fields as economics, music, film, ethnography, journalism, and art to produce videos as educational and marketing tools leading to greater global social awareness and action.

Students enrolled in the course document and assist individuals around the world – musicians, artists, social activists – with similar goals of working to create social and economic progress, raise personal and public awareness and conduct investigative teamwork with a purpose. The course is interdisciplinary in that it includes majors from throughout the university and utilizes music as the medium to bring and bond the students together in their approach when choosing subjects, trading ideas and entrepreneurially collaborating – a defining element of the class.

This class can be viewed as the prototype for similar classes worldwide, and Don’s vision is to continue the virtual networking that his students have created. Examples of social forces developed in the class leading to transformation in action include the films “Fairloom,” “Street Musicians,” “Sex Trafficking in Denver” and “Tjupurru.” (Adrian Fabila, known around the world as Tjupurru, is a didgeribone virtuoso with whom Don has collaborated both in concerts and recordings, and is also a “musical activist” for social change. The latest collaborative didjetronica recordings are a combination of international players joining original grooves originated in Aboriginal Australia, and are remixed by the great Lee Groves of ARIA Fame – the award for Grammy-quality work in Australia. The album, entitled Global Grove, will be released later this year and includes players from every continent.)

Clips from these student-produced videos, created in the Fall Semesters of 2008 and 2009 at the Atlas Institute, can be viewed from Don’s website http://dongrusin.com/videos.php. Additional information on the course itself along with a prototype for similar classes worldwide can be been in the IMPACT presentation http://dongrusin.com/files/public/impact.pdf on Don’s website.

The recipient of Colorado University’s Alumni Association’s 2006 George
Norlin Award for distinguished lifetime achievement, Don also serves on the advisory board of the department of economics at CU.

The Performer

(1) AT LAST 5:06
Written by Harry Warren (lyrics by Mack Gordon), EMI Feist Catalogue, inc.
Notes: When I was a kid I used to listen to Etta James sing this song, and was always thrilled by her expression, the heart in her delivery. The melody and the form, the way the chords amble through the song is the master mold from which so many songs were copied. It still gets me. The song itself is a definition of an Old Friend.

(2) A Walk With Leonard 4:51
Written by Don Grusin, Bad Dog Music

Notes: Leonard Feather was the music critic for the Los Angeles Times, and also a well-known composer for many artists of the 40s and 50s, including with and for Billie Holiday. As he was to many musicians around the world, he was a friend of mine. For about 7 years every spring we would stay in the same house for a week in Boulder while we attended the University Of Colorado Conference on World Affairs. Daily wed have breakfast and then walk to the campus together and discuss matters important to us both, usually not music so much, but life, art, sometimes politics. Because he was such a believer in acoustic instruments, there was always some friction between us about my using synthesizers and Fender Rhodes Electric Piano for which I became known. ( A Videotape exists showing Leonard actually PLAYING A SYNTHESIZER in concert during the conference. I showed it to him. He smiled. ) I wish I had written this song and had played it for him while he was alive, because it sounds like him. Id guess he probably enjoys it from his current space in the universe.

(3) FIRE AND RAIN 5:40
Written by James Taylor, EMI Blackwood Music, Inc. and Country Road Music
Notes: Growing up as a jazz player primarily, James Taylor was one of the few popular singer-songwriters that I accepted as one of us musicians. I didn’t mean to have such a lofty view that jazz-related music was the true source of every other American style of music, but I was, along with my fellow players, fairly narrow minded. Can you believe it?! James, however, was OK with me, and his melodies, and chords, his honesty in the delivery, I always appreciated. In the 70s, in Aspen Colorado, and San Francisco I played his song Fire and Rain as if it were my own. This is about the time when I was just starting to jazz-fusion-ize music I knew from other styles. I probably played this classic 1000 times or more. When I met James later on while we concertized in Tokyo, I was inspired to re-introduce myself and the listener to his song and now, finally, this version.

(4) Flora 4:41
Written by Don Grusin, Bad Dog Music
Notes: Living in San Francisco in the 70s I was finally able to hear musicians that our landlocked Colorado didnt permit. One of the highlights was seeing and later meeting and playing with Flora Purim and Airto Moreira. Although this song is not really Brazilian in any way, I wanted to say or speak this piece to her, and so the title. It means flower in Portuguese, Italian, and Spanish. I later on recorded with her, and wrote the title song with her daughter Diana, This Magic, on her Speak No Evil album.

(5) Foreign Service 5:06
Written by Don Grusin, Bad Dog Music
Notes: I was supposed to have been an economist, having trained at the University, and having taught that subject at a few colleges. While I was in graduate school, I met many students that are now doing what I had hoped I was preparing for, a career with the UN, or the US State Department as an economist, developing countries. For about a year I was close to it while in Mexico on a Fulbright teaching fellowship, but music was too strong a force. So I am dedicating this song to my old friends, some in the military, in Africa, Asia, Latin America, North America, who gave and are giving their lives to creating greater well being to our near and distant relatives in the developing world.

(6) Estate 5:15
Written by Bruno Martino and Bruno Brighetti, MCA Inc. & Santa Cecilia Casa, Ediciones Musica (Spain)
Notes: If there was one melody that defines Brasil, but thats not from Brasil, it is Estate…meaning spring, in Italian. I first heard it in Brasil played by Luis Essa, (a marvelous pianist who lived and died in Rio) then I recorded it in the US a long time ago with Joe Pass, Oscar Castro-Neves, John Pisano. Because it has a melody that circles around and around and ends up where it started out, it has the shape of a classic story about life, or love, or spring, as its titled, put to music. Besides, all my musician friends know and love this song.

(7) Circles 4:51
Written by Don Grusin, Bad Dog Music
Notes: Circles means circle of 5ths, a sort of exercise that musicians practice in order to perfect their ability in playing easily in different keys. This piece is really an exercise, and its dedicated to musicians, with the spirit that even such practice can evoke some music thats at least a little interesting. The improvising is the meaning of the song with the simple melody giving room, benchmarks, for the circling chords showing up to do their job 2 or 3 times a bar. You can use this format for your own practice. Just start in C-minor.

( Theme from High Noon (Do not forsake me) 5:18
Written by Dimitri Tiomkin, with lyrics by Ned Washington, Leo Feist Inc.
Notes: When I was little, my father and mother would play records, old 78s and later, LPs on our record player. This is before television, and most every family had a record player. We had lots of classical records, (my father having been a classical violinist), and just a few jazz or popular records. My mom seemed like she appreciated classical music, but her favorite stuff was what was called popular music, including songs like The Tennessee Waltz and this song, High Noon, which was the theme of the great Stanley Kramer western film. The source of our greatest enjoyment was attending the Vogue movie theatre in my little town in Colorado on a Saturday afternoon or night, and I have been listening to this melody from that movie in my head for years and needed to put it somewhere. The lyrics still make sense in 2010:

Do Not forsake me oh my darlin
On this our wedding day
Do not forsake me oh my darlin
Wait, wait along
(sort of like git-long little doggies, the cowboy anthem)

I do no know what fate awaits me
I only know I must be brave
And I must face a man who hates me
Or lie a coward, a craven coward
Or lie a coward in my grave

Oh, to be torn twixt love and duty
Sposin I lose my fair-haired beauty
Look at that big hand move along, near
High Noon

He made a vow while in states prison,
Vowed it would be my life or hisn,
Im not afraid of death but, oh
What will I do if you leave me?

Do not forsake me, oh my darlin
You made a promise as a bride
Do not forsake me, oh my darlin
Although youre grievin, dont think of leavin
Now that I need you by my side…
Wait along….

(9) New Age Cowboy 4:28,
Written by Don Grusin, Bad Dog Music
Notes: I was raised in a cowboy town, with a railroad station, horses, and cattle; I knew everyone there, walked and rode bicycles everywhere, but I never was a real cowboy. My brother Dave was (and is) but I wanted to be so cool and at the time, cowboys were not so cool. I knew a lot of them, and my father had a jewelry store where cowboys would come in and buy rings, and get their watches repaired. And even though I worked on their farms and ranches, I knew I wasnt really a cowboy. Once I wrote a song for a Kenji Omura record called I Never was a Cowboy, just so there would be no confusion about my background. This New Age Cowboy song is just a little joke about how lots of present-day cowboys live and act. You can fill in the blanks.

(10) Serious Romance 3:32
Written by Don Grusin, Bad Dog Music
Notes: Growing up never seems to stop. When I was a kid, I thought when I grew up Id probably never have thoughts about romance, you know the theme here… because Id just grow out of it, be mature, wait for football season to come around every year, and pretty well keep those tricky notions buried and out of sight. So this is a little music about how serious romance can sometimes be, and how the engine for it mostly doesnt go away.

(11) Sadie 3:37
Written by Don Grusin, Bad Dog Music

Notes: I wrote this song for my daughter when she was born. I asked my brother Dave to play on my initial JVC record, and he did, but before he had actually seen Sadie for the first time. When we finished I took him home to see her and he said…oh man! If I had known she was this beautiful, I would have added a few more curly-cues (trills, turns, filigreed notes) into the music! So I have reconstructed the song about my daughter to fit the times. It’s a new version, and so is she.

(12) Well, its about you 4:26
Written by Don Grusin, Bad Dog Music
Notes: I get questioned frequently about what this or that song is about. I wrote this one especially for you. Tell anybody.

(13) Lost And Found 1:45
Written by Don Grusin, Don Grusin Music
Notes: All my life I’ve wondered about how to handle loss…loss of people, pencils, memory, names, so this is an invented melody that says here I am and it takes a few unorthodox pathways, changing keys, fighting almost, to find its way back… and finally a progression that restates the theme and gives it an anchor, as if the melody was first lost, and then found. So there is always a way to be Found, after being Lost, if only in the music.

(14) The Re-Education of DG 4:20
Written by Don Grusin, Don Grusin Music
Notes: As we get older, we know and understand more. I think its a rule. And our patience grows, and our spirit to meet our challenges gets stronger. I think it is a natural phenomenon and I think the best way to describe this evolution in words is… Re-Education. There you have it.

Enjoy.

a musically satisfying experience, adding to the the charm of meeting the cream of London Musicians, Film and Music producers, Composers, and Directors. Here I am with great harmonica player Adam Glasser
